A BRACKNELL arts centre has announced that parking charges will be introduced in its car park from September 2026, marking a significant but necessary change in the organisation’s 53-year history.
Since opening in 1973, South Hill Park Arts Centre (SHP) has resisted introducing parking charges, recognising the importance of keeping access to arts and culture as affordable and welcoming as possible for residents and visitors.
However, the charitable trust that operates the centre has concluded that parking income is now essential to ensure the venue’s long-term sustainability.
South Hill Park is operated by an independent not-for-profit charitable trust, with all surpluses reinvested directly into its charitable objectives, arts programmes, community activities and the maintenance of its historic buildings and estate.
Over the past 15 years, the financial landscape for arts organisations has changed dramatically.
Since 2011, South Hill Park’s core funding has reduced by £600,000 per year, while operating costs have increased by £500,000 per year.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, these pressures have intensified, with substantial increases in utility bills, insurance premiums and other costs.
Under the new arrangements, all parking income will be retained by South Hill Park Trust, providing a vital new revenue stream to support the Trust’s charitable objectives.
The funds raised will help sustain arts provision across Berkshire while contributing towards the upkeep of the centre’s theatres, creative facilities and the Grade II listed Georgian mansion that forms the heart of the site.
Craig Titley-Rawson, Chief Executive of South Hill Park Arts Centre, said: “This is not a decision we have taken lightly.
“As an independent charitable trust, every decision we make is guided by our responsibility to protect and develop South Hill Park for future generations.
“We recognise that some visitors will be disappointed by this change.
“Nevertheless, the trustees and leadership team believe this step is now necessary to safeguard the long-term viability of South Hill Park and ensure that we can continue delivering high-quality arts, culture and community activities for the people of Bracknell Forest and beyond.”
