A racing driver from Wokingham is continuing his battle for a championship title, following further success in his latest race.
24-year-old Bobby Trundley is autistic, and is a driver for Team BRIT, the world’s only competitive team of all-disabled racing drivers. On Saturday 13th September, he competed in round 6 of the Britcar Endurance Championship at Snetterton Circuit.
Bobby is paired up with Asha Silva, who is also autistic, and together, they have dominated their class in recent rounds, finishing first in class in their latest race.
The drivers took on qualifying in the morning, finishing 1st in their class and determining their starting position on the start grid.
The pairs then took on a 90 minute race, which brought more challenge than usual thanks to the torrential rain that began as soon as the race began. For the first half of the race, rain lashed down on to the track, at one point causing a red flag stoppage due to safety concerns, and many safety flags.
Asha had the drive of her life, taking on stint 1 in the BMW. From starting 24th in the grid, she moved her way up, before handing over to Bobby who brought them home 1st in class and 4th overall.
Asha was then named ‘Driver of the Day’ by championship organisers in recognition of her superb performance on the track.
Bobby was diagnosed with severe autism as a child and found a love of motorsport through karting at age 10. He found it to have a profound impact on the way he manages the challenges of autism, and went on to become a 5 x national karting champion before joining Team BRIT in 2019.
Bobby said: “It was an amazing weekend! The team did some amazing work on the car, improving its reliability and Asha and I then repaid them by bringing home a fantastic result!
“Asha drove amazing well in the torrential conditions, showing how far she’s come throughout our year together. She handed me the car in a fantastic position, and I was able to build from that, setting some of the fastest laps of the whole grid in the wet in the process. Bringing the car home P4 overall was an amazing feeling!
“I also have to say congratulations to our team mates Aaron and Noah for their amazing result, winning their class and finishing 2nd overall.”
Bobby races again at Oulton Park on 11th October.
