Following the deeply saddening news of the passing of England and Liverpool legend Kevin Keegan at the age of 75 yesterday, football fans worldwide have been sharing their finest memories of the double Ballon d’Or winner.
While his exploits at Anfield and St James’ Park are etched into national folklore, in East Berkshire will always remember the summer of 1976, when “Mighty Mouse” brought his unmatched determination directly to our doorstep.
It was June 1976 – a period remembered for a punishing, relentless heatwave. The BBC chose Bracknell as the stage for its hit television phenomenon, Superstars.
The show pitted the country’s elite athletes against one another in various sports, and as Europe’s most electrifying footballer, Keegan was the star attraction.
What followed became one of the most iconic, replayed moments in British television history.
Competing in the cycling event under the blazing Berkshire sun, Keegan was flying. But tragedy struck on the Bracknell track. Colliding with another competitor’s wheel, the Liverpool forward toppled headlong onto the unforgiving cinder track at high speed.
The footage – and the striking photographs of the aftermath – captured the true grit of the man. Suffering deep lacerations, scrapes, and heavy bruising across his shoulder, back, arm, and leg, Keegan was left bleeding and in visible misery.
To the amazement of the crowd gathered in Bracknell and millions watching at home, the superstar refused to throw in the towel.
After receiving medical attention for his severe track burns, Keegan epitomised the fighting spirit that later defined his managerial career. He returned to the field later that day to compete in the steeplechase event.
Nursing a heavily bandaged right side, he didn’t just participate; he dominated. Showing off his supreme physical fitness and explosive speed, he won the steeplechase event outright, cementing the Bracknell taping as the stuff of sporting legend.
While Newcastle and Liverpool will rightfully claim him as their own, locals will always hold a unique slice of the Kevin Keegan story.
He showed our community what true world-class dedication looked like – even when covered in cinder dust and blood.
