Wokingham ramblers will aid Berkshire cancer victims with a special walk this Sunday – and it’s not too late to sign up.
The beneficiaries of the walk, which starts from Wokingham Library in Denmark Street, will be The Sue Ryder Hospice (Nettlebed), Children’s Mental Health Wokingham ARC and Lathia, which works with unemployed people to help themacquire skills needed to find work. Registration can be made via the Rotary Club of Wokingham’s website and walkers can set off on the ramble between 9.30am and 2pm, to fit in with what suits them best.
The route begins in the lower car park of Denmark Street behind Wokingham Library, then through Palmer Gardens and skirts round Langborough Recreation Ground. Marshals will be on hand along Gypsy Lane and down the Footpath, across the bridge over the Waterloo railway line.
The walk continues along the footpath past Ludgrove School, along to the vista of Grays Farm. Here strawberries are growing in very long rows in tunnels seemingly without end.
Next the Garrick Plantation,with its sandy track running through large numbers of pine trees, ends at the Gorrick Cottage. Large fields with grazing cattle follow before one comes to the Lucas Hospital, an almshouse from the 16th Century to 2002.
The route then passes Chapel Green Farm, where there are horses to see, eventually reaching the Finchampstead Road, Denmark Street and The Finish – back where we began.
The event, organised by the Rotary Club of Wokingham, revives the walk WADE organised previously for many years. Known then as the WADE Walk, the route led round the Broadmoor Hospital extending to over 20 miles.
This year’s walk is much shorter – 4.1 miles and is aimed at all ages
