This week I would like to look at another hand I played recently at a local club.
♠ A K 7
♥ A Q 10 8 Dealer West
♦ 9 3 2 N/S vulnerable
♠ J 5 ♣ K 5 3 ♠ Q 8 3
♥ 9 7 ♥ K J 3
♦ A K J 6 ♦ 8 7 5 4
♣ A Q 9 7 6 ♠ 10 9 6 4 2 ♣ 10 4 2
♥ 6 5 4 2
♦ Q 10
♣ J 8
I was West and opened 1C showing 12-19 points and at least four clubs.
North overcalled with 1NT showing 16-18 points, a balanced or fairly balanced hand with a stopper in clubs.
East passed.
Luckily for my partner and I, South chose to pass as well, and after West passed the final contract was 1NT.
This turned out to be rather unfortunate for North as he went three down.
South could have saved him from this pain by bidding to achieve a final contract of 2S.
As they were playing transfers she could have bid 2H which shows five spades and tells partner to bid 2S.
South should then pass.
If they had not been playing transfers South could have bid 2S immediately which is a weakness take out and a closing bid.
If they had played in 2S they would probably have been one down instead of three down, and as E-W are likely to make 3C this would be a good result for N-S.
