Visitors to an arts centre in Berkshire will see their childhood fairy tales brought to life in an enchanting retelling of the Grimm Brothers’ tales this month.
South Hill Park will host the summer production of Grimm Tales in its Wilde Theatre from Friday, August 23 to Sunday, August 25 and Thursday, August 29 to Sunday, September 1.
The family show- adapted by poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy- will take viewers on a tour of the well-known stories of Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella and many more.
Director, Julian Hirst said: “Our lively cast of 14, whose ages span 3 generations, are really enjoying putting a fresh spin on these old tales.
The script is faithful to the original stories, so wicked stepmothers remain wicked and foolish peasants remain foolish. What is different is that the tales have been re-written in a language that children will be able to hear.
“Performing the show in the round also helps to break the fourth wall so that audience members will feel part of the action.”
Ms Hirst has worked with the South Hill Park’s Wilde Theatre since 1984 and on previous productions including Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty, Blackadder and The Railway Children.
She added: “Watching Grimm Tales is like listening to bedtime stories without having to wear your pyjamas.”
