A CHARITY dedicated to supporting people with a learning disability and/or autism, and their families, says that spaces are available at its Gateway Life Skills Group.
Promise Inclusion seeks new members to benefit from its Wokingham scheme, which it describes as an exciting opportunity for adults with learning disabilities and/or autism to develop confidence, independence, and friendships in a supportive, fun environment.
Debbie, Gateway co-ordinator, said: “It’s so good to see members grow in confidence, while challenging themselves and having fun.”
The group follows the Gateway Award.
Similar to the Duke of Edinburgh award, it offers bronze, silver and gold levels.
Participants work through activities in areas such as Fitness, Lifestyle, Hobbies, Volunteering, and an Adventure Challenge, earning certificates as they progress.
Creative, practical, and social activities mean that members can take part in arts and crafts, sport, volunteering, and outdoor challenges.
They have included KataKanuing, darts, archery, bowling, hiking, table tennis, cycling, arts and crafts, pickleball, and even trips to Legoland – all designed to encourage members to try new things, have fun, and feel proud of what they achieve.
A parent said: “Gateway is pitched at the right level for different skills such as social skills and other skills; it works.”
And a Gateway member agreed: “This is great fun – a tremendous day.”
Gateway runs at the Voluntary and Community Hub, Wokingham, every Thursday from 9:30am to 1:30pm .
Places are currently subsidised, and cost £30 per session.
