The Wokingham Repair Cafe, the latest edition of which took place last Saturday, has helped to keep more than 10,000 items out of landfill in the two years since its launch.
Ian Range, talking to Wokingham Today on behalf of the Wokingham Repair Cafe, said that vacuum cleaners and toasters were the most popular items being brought in.
He added that since opening in April 2024, the repair cafe and its 50+ volunteers have repaired more than 1,000 items with a 71% success rate, keeping them from landfill and saving the more than 30,000 kg of CO² emissions that would have been required to manufacture replacements.
That’s the same amount of CO² that would be captured by 1,360 trees in a year.
One example of that was Patricia, who brought along a malfunctioning air fryer that would otherwise have ended up at the tip.
Wokingham MP Clive Jones, who popped along on Saturday to show his support, said: “This is a really great initiative, and this was one of the first places that I came to when I was elected in July, 2024.
He added that he would be bringing his office vacuum cleaner that needs attention to a future event.
Ian added: “We’re here on the second Saturday of every month.
“People can just come along or you can book things in through the website.”
