Scans for more sinkholes in Charvil have been carried out after a crater opened up in a car park near a primary school last week.
The sinkhole appeared in East Park Farm car park, near Charvil Piggot primary school, on Monday November 20. Charvil Parish Council then announced on Wednesday that some further collapse had taken place.
Now residents are waiting for the results of a test for other sinkholes below the surface, according to parish councillor Lee Cripps.
He told the LDRS: “The hole hasn’t grown. I’ve flown my drone over every day just to check it.
“There was a Wokingham Borough Council ground radar survey performed over the weekend, but I don’t know the outcome.”
Councillor Cripps added the cause of the sinkhole was still unknown – and hoped the Wokingham Borough Council survey might shine some light on it.
He said: “There’s been lots of guessing and supposition, but really you don’t get a sinkhole for no reason. You could say that we have, in the last month or six weeks, had a lot of rain.
“Is there an underground spring or stream? Nobody really knows at this point.”
In an update released last week, Charvil Parish Council said further collapse had taken place and the sides of the sinkhole were unstable.
It said: “The sinkhole will remain cordoned off, and while the car park is open to pedestrians, cyclists, we would ask that you take extra care around the safety barriers, and keep any pets under close control.”
But councillor Cripps said the further collapse had only taken place at the surface.
He said: “The ground had dropped away beneath the bricks, and the bricks were hanging over in a friction hold. They kicked in the loosest circle of bricks when they came to inspect it.
“From the surface, the hole had grown but it hadn’t grown underneath. It’s from the bricks, from the surface.”
Charvil Parish Council said it was working with Wokingham Borough Council – which owns the land – and the primary school to keep disruption to a minimum.
The school informed parents of the sinkhole, and is awaiting updates from the council.
