WOKINGHAM residents are set to showcase their artistic talents this Christmas in a festive display trail.
Spencers Wood and Three Mile Cross residents will decorate their houses with festive displays, helping the village get into the Christmas spirit.
This year, the event is raising money for McMillan Cancer Support, with UPP, the University of Reading’s accommodation partner, pledging to match the total raised.
Organiser Caroline Male said: “It’s lovely to have so much support from the community regarding our local Charity Christmas Trail. With so much uncertainty going on in the world currently, this Christmas trail is something that the whole community can be a part of, lifting festive spirits and supporting McMillan, a wonderful charity needed by many.
“Last Christmas, Simonds Grove (a road in Spencers Wood) raised £1,800 for this charity so hoping this year’s Christmas Trail will raise more by people donating to the JustGving page assigned to this festive event.”
A sense of community sits at the heart of the event, with organisers urging residents to get involved regardless of the size of their displays.
Once all participating households are finalised, a trail map will be produced which can be purchased. This will allow residents to wonder around the two villages, enjoying and being inspired by the creativity of their neighbours.
Individuals and families are welcome to enter free of charge, with prizes, including a £50 voucher, on offer for the best displays. Those wishing to donate a prize should contact organiser Caroline.
The closing date for entries is Wednesday, November 23, with the trail running from Saturday, December 10, to Monday, December 26.
The event initially intended to cover Spencers Wood to ensure children could complete the route mapped out. However, with so much interest from surrounding villages, Caroline is considering creating a second map for Three Mile Cross.
Spencers Wood and Three Mile Cross have become somewhat synonymous with high quality scarecrow trails, enjoying well-participated Platinum Jubilee and Hallowe’en trails already this year.
McMillan Cancer Support is one of the largest charities in the UK. It provides specialist health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer. It also looks to help with the social, emotional and practical consequences of cancer.
