In a celebration of records, two of 80s pop’s finest groups go head-to-head showcasing their biggest-selling LPs.
The Vinyl Frontier: ABC vs Tears for Fears will take place on Saturday, March 8 at Norden Farm.
In 1983 ABC released The Lexicon of Love, produced by Trevor Horn. It was the soundtrack of early 1980s UK. Then, two years later, Tears for Fears reached their commercial zenith with a transatlantic smash hit LP. Both albums contain multiple hit singles and influenced many future artists.
ABC were formed in Sheffield in 1980 and achieved 10 UK and five US Top 40 hit singles between 1981 and 1990. Their 1982 debut album, The Lexicon of Love, was a UK number-one and often features in UK critics’ lists of favourite albums.
Tears for Fears were formed in Bath in 1981 by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith and were initially associated with the new wave synthesiser bands of the early 1980s but later branched out into mainstream rock and pop and international chart success.
Vinyl Frontier focuses on their second album, Songs from the Big Chair that spent much of 1985 in the album charts and was one of the year’s biggest sellers worldwide.
The album was eventually certified triple-platinum in the UK and quintuple-platinum in the US (where it remained the number 1 album for five weeks in the summer of 1985).
Songs include Shout and Everybody Wants to Rule the World.
