One of the borough’s four MPs has announced that she wants to hold a general election on Thursday, June 8.
Theresa May, the MP for Maidenhead – whose constituency includes parts of Woodley, Sonning and the Northern Parishes of Twyford and Ruscombe – became Prime Minister last year as a result of the European Referendum.
This morning, Mrs May stood outside 10 Downing Street to announce her plans for a vote in the House of Commons tomorrow. If she gets a two-thirds majority she can then go to the Queen to request a dissolution of Parliament and then the vote will take place in June.
Mrs May said that the decision was one she had taken recently and was to strengthen the Government’s hand as it negiotiated Brexit.
She came out of a Cabinet meeting to announce the news.
“I just chaired a meeting with the cabinet. We’ve agreed that that Govenrment should call a General Election on the 8th of June,” she said.
“In recent weeks Labour have threatened to vote against the final agreement we reach with the European Union.
“The Liberal Democrats said they want to grind the business of government to a standstill.
“The Scottish National Party say they will vote against the legislation that formally repeals Britain’s membership of the European Union.
“And un-elected members of the House of Lords have vowed to fight us every step of the way.
“If we do not hold a general election now, their political game playing will continue.”
“It will guarantee certainty and stability for the years ahead is to hold this election and seek your support for the decisions I must take.”
