HOME, I’m Darling, Twyford Drama’s October production, is already becoming a classic amongst amateur theatre groups.
“There is a very good reason for this,” said company members Joanne Davis and Frank Kaye.
“Our autumn audiences are in for a real treat – Laura Wade’s creation is an ingenious blend of laugh-aloud comedy and deep, thought-provoking themes.”
The play starts light-heartedly enough, with modern woman Judy deciding to live life as a stereotypical 1950s housewife.
But then the story changes track, delving deeply into contemporary issues of identity, gender roles, relationships, financial pressures, and the gulf between fantasy and reality.
“Audiences will leave Loddon Hall refreshed by the comical antics of the cast, yet wondering simultaneously whether the past was truly better, especially in terms of the expectations placed on men and women,” they continued.
“Home, I’m Darling is a veritable masterpiece of character, costume and culinary delights, and comedic timing – a real hit.”
The company has chosen to keep the set for this production of the play as simple as possible, focusing instead on its sharp, punchy language and the eccentric behaviour of its six characters.
Judy is played by Rebecca Down, with Marc Reid playing her husband, Johnny.
Fran (Rachel Walton), Marcus (Roger Paxton), Alex (Emma Cianchi), and Sylvia (Sandra Miall) complete the cast.
“These are a rich bunch of highly diverse and quirky characters,” continued Joanne and Frank, “and as part of the action they will need to deal with multiple items of food and drink, and frequent costume changes.”
Home I’m Darling! can be seen at Loddon Hall on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, October 8, 9, and 10.
