A record-breaking amount has been raised for this year’s Royal British Legion poppy appeal in Wokingham and Winnersh.
More than £74,000 was collected during this year’s campaign, more than 10% up on last year’s totals.
Wokingham appeal organiser David Dunham was understandably ecstatic with this year’s fundraising efforts.
He told Wokingham Today: “I’d like to thank everyone who has donated, and everyone that has helped with this year’s campaign.
“We could not have achieved this without a great team of volunteers, and with the support of Wokingham Town Council.”
Collections took place around Wokingham and Winnersh, including supermarket collections at Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s, and in Wokingham Market Place.
David said these collections are vital to the success of the campaign, and probably contribute 75% of the overall donations.
This year has also seen a rise in contactless donations, with more than £27,500 raised through this method alone.
Local schools also contributed a staggering £5,400 to the total.
This year marked the 16th year that David has coordinated the appeal in Wokingham, and during his time more than £500,000 has been collected.
