ROYAL Berkshire Fire and Rescue (RBFRS) urges people to stay safe around open water.
Members of the service will be on hand in Winnersh during July to answer people’s questions about how to avoid dangerous water-related incidents.
Following nationwide incidents of people drowning during the recent heatwave, it is urging people not to take risks.
While lakes, rivers and other open water can look inviting in warm weather, it says, they can be dangerous, even for confident swimmers.
Visitors to green spaces are reminded not to swim in lakes unless they are taking part in an authorised, organised session where safety measures are in place.
Open water can be dangerous even in warm weather, with risks, it says, including cold water shock, sudden changes in depth, and hidden objects.
Anyone getting into difficulty should remember:
Float to Live: float on your back and call for help.
If someone else is in difficulty, people should call 999 and ask for the fire service and ambulance.
Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service will be at Dinton Activity Centre on Saturday, July 11, from 10am to 12.30pm, sharing water safety advice with visitors.
