MOTORISTS are facing extreme traffic jams as work continues on the Sutton Seeds roundabout.
The works began last Monday, with phased lights on the roundabout halting regular traffic flow.
However, the effect has been most severe from Monday, November 4 due to the majority of local schools being on half term last week when the works began.
Commuters have contacted The Wokingham Paper this morning on the matter. One caller had their usual 15-minute journey from Winnersh to Reading take almost an hour due to the queuing traffic.
Emergency vehicles trying to pass along King’s Road are also getting stuck in the traffic.
Currently, the phased lights are causing excessive traffic build-up on the Sutton Seeds roundabout, the exit slip-road from the A3290 Westbound, as well as London Road.
The effect has also been seen on Saint Bartholomews Road, where motorists using the cut-through have found themselves in stand-still traffic.
Other cut-throughs including Eldon Road, just off London Road are heavily congested, with congestion extending to Pitts Lane past Earley Cricket Club.
The phased lights are currently in place due to works being carried out by SSE.
A spokesperson from SSE said: “Unfortunately these are essential works, and do need to take place to support local homes and businesses in the area.
“We began the works during half term to help minimise the effect and get the bulk of the work underway when there was less traffic on the roads.
“The work has been advertised for some weeks now, with the traffic management plans agreed by Reading and Wokingham Borough Councils.
“Of course we plan to complete these essential works as quickly and safely as possible.”
