Ruben Selles has said that he met with club owner Dai Yongge twice prior to agreeing to becoming the new Reading FC manager.

The Royals’ owner has been under scrutiny from a large section of supporters due to his management of the club where there have been numerous financial issues and punishments during his tenure.

“We met a couple of times, it was part of the process,” said Selles.

“We had talks about how we want to do it and what we want to build.

“We’re clear on what we want and how to work as a club to move the club forward. That’s the impression I got and that’s why I’m here.

“He wants the best for the club and for the team to bounce back to the Championship as quickly as possible. That’s what we all want.”

The Spaniard wants to rebuild the connection with the fans and believes that is vitally important to achieving success for the upcoming season.

He continued: “The best way (to reconnect the fans) is to win football matches. We need the fans to be with us because we cannot do it without them.

“Everybody has a past. We need to look at the future and what we can do together and be together from the beginning to improve the situation and build something together.

“I will take my part in communicating with the fans and the media.”

Selles also outlined his tactical style and how he favours his team to play.

“I like to be protagonists in the game, to be very intense and dynamic, that try to score goals.

“I like to have a team to defend high and can manage both transitions, defensive and offensive, with a big eye on set plays which is a very important part of the game in League One.

“Hopefully we will bring in a couple of members of coaching staff, we are working on it.

“One will be a specialist in set plays and the other a specialist in the tactical aspects of the game, supporting me with the game plans and areas we want to do from game to game.”
