TRIBUTES have been paid to a former mayor of Wokingham who passed away last month.
John Peter Green served on both Wokingham Town and Wokingham District councils, acting as chairman of the District Council in 1995-96 and again in 1997-98. He was also Town Mayor from 1987-1989.
A statement from the town council paid tribute to him.
“John Green was a kind-hearted gentleman who had a passion for the community in which he lived.
“He served on Wokingham Town Council between 1981 and 1991 during which time he was an active member on a number of committees including being Vice Chairman of the Planning Committee. John was Mayor in 1987-1989.
“Among his achievements whilst being Mayor was to found Greenvale Stroke Club of Wokingham which provided practical help and support for stroke victims and their families – this is now known as Wokingham Stroke Club.
“He also launched a pressure group to save 18 beds at Wokingham Hospital.
“Not only did John serve on the Town Council but he also served at Wokingham Borough Council for 23 years. He held numerous roles there which included Chairman of Council 1995-1996/1997-1998.
“John retired to Devon a number of years ago to Ilfracombe, Devon, with his wife, Christine where he became a published author of Children’s books.
“He also became Chairman of the Patients Participation Group for the Waterside Medical Practice in Ilfracombe.
“In his retirement, he enjoyed various interests including good food and wine, reading, swimming, music, art, opera and ballet.
“He was also fluent in French and had studied a number of other languages including Latin and Ancient Greek.”
