Do you like being part of a team, getting fresh air and helping people in need? If so, then the Green ‘n’ Tidy gardening scheme could be the volunteer role for you! Green ‘n’ Tidy provides a basic gardening service for elderly and disabled residents of Wokingham Borough who cannot maintain their own properties, do not have local family support and/or lack the financial resources to employ commercial companies. This project does not compete with established gardening businesses as we are a charity and the team of volunteers provides basic gardening, including lawn mowing, hedge trimming and weeding, to vulnerable people in need. In order to help far more clients across Wokingham Borough, we are expanding our scheme. To be able to do this, we need more help! We are looking for volunteers to help an average of one morning per week, although we can be flexible with this, if you can only help 2 or 3 mornings per month for example. Our teams go out 6 days a week (Mondays to Saturdays) usually 9am to 1pm approximately and you can sign up to a regular day. We are currently looking for more volunteers on Wednesdays and Fridays but please get in touch if you are interested in volunteering in general.
SHARE Wokingham is a locally founded food sharing charity with 15 sites in Wokingham and surrounding areas. Each week SHARE helps over 2000 people in our local community who need support foodwise by redistributing an incredible 40 tonnes of food from local supermarkets and food suppliers that would otherwise go to waste. We are looking for a volunteer van driver to help us. The task is to collect fresh food every Wednesday at Norreys Church between 11:30 am and 11:45 am and drop it off at the Rainbow Centre in Winnersh (RG41 5SG) The van is located at the Rainbow Centre, so will need to be collected from there first. Commitment is once or twice a month, on a Wednesday, for two maximum. You will need to have a full driving licence and be able to legally drive a van (category B.)
At ABC to read we believe life is better when everyone can read and express themselves confidently. Our trained reading mentors provide children with the skills and confidence they need to do just that. With the pandemic, we know there is even more need for volunteers as some children may have fallen behind. Once volunteers are trained, they are then matched up with a local school. Commitment is ideally twice a week for 1 1/2 hours in the afternoons but once a week will be considered. The role is extremely rewarding, learning new skills and strengthens our community.
If you are interested in discussing any of these roles, please get in touch with the Wokingham Volunteer Centre on 0118 977 0749 or email [email protected].
