A YEAR FIVE pupil from Wokingham who loves caring for wildlife says she is looking forward to seeing the town’s bug hotels while carrying out her duties as the new mini mayor.
Amber Murray, from Westende Junior School, has been appointed to the role by Wokingham Town Council. She will accompany town mayor Cllr Julian McGhee-Sumner on official engagements throughout the municipal year including the Winter Carnival, Dressing The Christmas Tree and the May Fayre.
The town council said that schools within the town boundaries are invited to nominate two pupils for the honorary position.
Nominated children write a letter of introduction to the Mayor, and this year’s 10 finalists – from Westende, St Paul’s, Hawthorns, St Teresa’s and Emmbrook Junior Schools – attended
a tea party with the Cllr McGhee-Sumner before this year’s Mini-Mayor was selected.
Amber shared in her letter that she has an interest in caring for wildlife and she loves seeing the bug-hotels that people are creating in Wokingham to help them.
Cllr McGhee-Sumner said: “It was lovely to read all the letters and meet the finalists at the Town Hall for tea. I’d like to thank all those children in the town who put themselves forward for Mini-Mayor and their parents and schools for supporting them.
“All the finalists would have made excellent Mini-Mayors so it was very hard choosing just one.
“It was fascinating chatting to the children, finding out about their interests and, of course, their views on Wokingham. Amber has a lovely personality that will serve her well in this role and I am really looking forward to attending local events with her.”
