RESIDENTS of Wokingham’s Westende almshouse community had fun raising money for charity.
Molly and Hugh, both Westende residents, wanted to raise some money for Thames Hospice and asked their community for help.
“I chose to support Thames hospice, because some family members having passed from cancer, I know how important hospices are and how much money is needed to keep them going,” said Molly.
Care at Thames Hospice is free of charge to all in need of vital hospice care.
To fund its services 365 days a year, the hospice said in a thank you letter to the Westende Community, that it must raise £39,000 each day, which it manages through charitable support and the generosity of the community.
For their fundraising event, Molly and Hugh decided on a Westende coffee and cake sale.
However, this rapidly expanded to include a tumbola, raffle, book stall, name the teddy, and guess how many sweets in the jar, with other residents, family, and friends generously donating their baked goodies, and volunteering to help.

“The morning was a huge success, and enabled us to raise £850 for Thames Hospice,” said Molly, Hugh and their community.
“We all had a great time on the day and felt very proud of what we had achieved .
“In fact, we enjoyed it so much we’re thinking of having another event towards the end of the year.”
