Where else could you get a film, fashion and art review all in one article? Well here of course!
The French Connection was a great 1970’s film starring Gene Hackman as detective “Popeye Doyle” … One of my favourite films.
The French Connection is also the name of a very successful high street fashion business set up by designer Stephen Marks one year after the aforementioned film of the same name was released. Today we have our very own French Connection to discuss… Paul Beauvais, an artist of some international repute, who hit the art scene a decade or two later.
Paul Beauvais was born in the UK in 1966.
He is a fourth-generation artist of French descent. His great-grandfather was the well-known French artist, Charles Henri Beauvais (fl. 1862-1909), his grandfather, Arnold Beauvais (1886-1982) moved the family to London and became President of The London Sketch Club.
His father, Walter John Beauvais (1942-1998), was one of Britain’s most successful artist of his era with examples of his works having sold all over the world and is included in at least two Royal collections.
The young Paul was always to be found watching either his father or grandfather in their studios, he is completely self-taught and as a result his style is heavily influenced by his ancestry.
His paintings are quite unique and always colourful, but very French in style. He had three very successful solo exhibitions in London before moving onto pastures new. He now lives very happily with his wife and three children in Australia.
Like his forebears his works have been snapped up by many serious art collectors and his paintings can be found in collections the world over.
The painting we are looking at is a beautiful little oil on board by Paul Beauvais of people in a park doing what people in a park do.
Some are just out for a walk, others are seated taking in the weather, some may even be sitting playing some music to the passers-by. Either way it is an intriguing small work that really has a lot of colour. It is typical of Beauvais’ style as it is painted in an impasto style where the oil has been applied quite heavily with a palette knife with bold, wavy strokes emphasising the wind and turbulent clouds overhead.
This painting is available to view and/or purchase in my art gallery in Holme Grange Craft Village. It is listed at a mere £600, a reasonable price for a work of this type and size by this artist.
