AN ARBORFIELD school celebrated a century of learning at its end of term presentation with speeches, songs from the decades, cake, and the unveiling of a plaque.
Children, parents, teachers past and present and special guests gathered at Farley Hill to mark 100 years of learning in Arborfield Green, with bunting made by the children fluttering in the breeze.
Although the school itself is 100 years, old the community moved into its current state of the art facilities in 2021 within the new Arborfield Green development.
Chair of the school’s Board of Governors Duncan Hamilton welcomed everyone to the centenary celebration, and thanked everyone for their contributions to the school’s ongoing success.
Special guests were Deputy Mayor of Wokingham Borough Cllr Melanie De Jong, Cllrs Mike Barker and Ian Lawlor from Barkham Parish Council, Woodbury House friends, former members of staff, pupils and governors, and two previous headteachers; Lynn Marshall, and Emma Clarke who spearheaded the school’s relocation to its new site.
“We’re celebrating something remarkable and memorable,” said Mr Hamilton.
“Today we remember 100 years of learning, laughter, friendship, teamwork and community.”
Addressing current pupils, he continued: “You are part of something much bigger than you may realise.
“You are the newest chapter in a story that began long before any of us here today were even born.
“It’s a story that will continue long after you have grown up and moved on to your next adventures.
“One day you may return and say ‘I was part of that story, too.’ ”
The school’s mission, he said, is to give every child the best possible start in life and to prepare them to be able to succeed in an ever changing world.
Cllr De Jong also spoke, remarking that the children were a credit to their families, their school, and their community.
“Those who are leaving to go to secondary school, may you succeed and prosper in everything that you want to do,” she said.
And current headteacher Mrs Jane Bateman described leading her supportive and dynamic team as a privilege.
“Everyone is so committed to the children, and to moving us forward,” she said.

The event ended with three very loud cheers from the whole school community.
