A BOROUGH town is preparing for its annual October event designed to get families out and about.
The autumn Wokingham Walk, organised by the Wokingham Lions Club, is an opportunity to give youngsters a break from screens, and for people to enjoy a stroll with family and friends in some of the natural spaces around the town.
There are three routes for people to follow: five miles, 10 miles, and 15 miles long.
All the routes start and end in the centre of Wokingham, and are a good way to discover some of the borough’s countryside locations.
Wokingham Lions says that many walkers have told them that they didn’t know such beautiful and interesting places existed so close to town.
They find that walkers use the event in different ways.
Some like to catch up with family and friends, while others use it to train for another longer walk.
Many people regard it as a way to raise sponsorship money for their favourite charity.
Wokingham Lion Andy Slay, who heads The Wokingham Walk team, said: “I’m delighted that this event has been so well received by the town and that both the spring and autumn Wokingham Walks are now firm fixtures in Wokingham’s Calendar.
“Local charities and individuals increasingly use the event to fundraise by sponsorship, something that we always wanted to happen from the event’s inception.”
Registration fees raised by the event itself go to Wokingham Lions Club to be distributed to local charities and good causes.
The event starts and ends in Elms Field, on Sunday, October 15.
Registration costs £15 for adults, £5 for 12 to 17 year olds, and is free for younger children.
All children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult.
People driving to the event are advised to check town centre parking costs, which now include Sunday parking charges.
