TO CELEBRATE Learning Disability week, a group of adults with learning disability and/or autism has been creating artwork that celebrates their contribution to society.
Members of Wokingham based charity Promise Inclusion have been creating pictures and taking photos of activities they enjoy, to decorate a retail unit in the town.
The charity’s development manager Victoria Sheridan, said: “
“We want to celebrate the things people with a learning disability bring to society.
“It’s about challenging the barriers that people with a learning disability face.
“And we want to talk about and celebrate the amazing things that people with a learning disability are doing in our community.”
Promise Inclusion supports people with learning disabilities and their families.
It provides activities and groups for children with learning disabilites and/or autism, and their siblings.
Adults are helped to learn new skills, to build self-esteem, and to become more independent, while carers can access the support of a community of staff and volunteers.
CEO Mary Durman, said: “its wonderful to see all the fantastic photos and pictures of our members having fun and being included in their local community”.
Comments from the artists themselves, include: ‘I look forward to going to work at Promise Inclusion’, ‘I love cocktails’, 1I like having my nails painted’, ‘I like working for Honda’, ‘I really enjoy my job at the supermarket and talking to all the people I meet’, and, ‘I like being with my friends.’
Learning Disability Week takes place this year from Monday, June 17 until Sunday, June 23.
Its theme, Do You See Me?” is about challenging the barriers faced by people with a learning disability.
To see the group’s artwork, people should make their way to Unit 3 of Bush Walk, opposite Stange the Jewellers.
