Henley Arts Trail 2017: All you need to know ahead of this weekend’s fun

THE FIRST major arts event of the season is just around the corner, and The Wokingham Paper has everything you need to ensure you don’t miss out.

Henley Arts Trail, which takes place at venues across Twyford, Wargrave, Charvil, Remenham and, of course, Henley, over the May Bank Holiday weekend, will see hundreds of artists, sculptors, photographers, jewellers and more showcase their talents for all to see.

Now in its 12th year, the arts trail has developed into a display of some of the finest artists the area has to offer, ranging from professionals to those who create art as a hobby.

Alfie and Rufus by Este MacLeod

One of the venues involved in the trail is Wargrave Arts, which is based in the Sansom Room at the Woodclyffe Hostel, above the library in Church Street. Elaine Fear is one of the artists who will be exhibiting, and says the trail is special because it is an opportunity to show off the lively arts scene in the village.

She said: “We have a thriving arts scene all year round, but the Arts Trail is our opportunity to really show people what we have to offer.

“We have a whole range of people exhibiting, from professionals such as Elizabeth Balding, to amateurs like myself who just love to paint.

“Phil Miller is a ceramicist who will be displaying with us this year, his work is very good and offers something a bit different. He was one of our biggest sellers last year.

“We have managed to expand the number of artists we have exhibiting this year due to a change in the Arts Trail rules, which is very exciting. Wargrave Arts have been exhibiting for three years now, and each year just gets bigger and better.

“What is nice is that we do get a lot of familiar faces each year, you get to know people who come to browse. We like to offer a relaxed, comfortable environment, visiting an art gallery can be a bit daunting but we are all very friendly.

“Some people do come away with items they have bought, but there is no expectation. A lot of people just come to browse and some even tick off every venue on the trail. This year there are 32 venues so that will be quite a feat if they manage that!”

Pendeen from the East by Linda Saul

Another artist who will displaying her work over the weekend is Linda Saul, who will be at venue 23 in Charvil.

Linda paints marine subjects including seascapes, lighthouses, boats and harbours. Her mixed media works are produced in the studio based on sketches made on location, which is usually Cornwall.

For the Arts Trail Linda will be joined by Carole Stephens, a painter/printmaker who also has a love of boats and the sea, but equally enjoys painting gardens and plant life.

Linda said: “Because this is an open studio venue there will be works in progress, sketchbooks etc on view, and also informal demonstrations.”

Henley Arts Trail takes place between Saturday, April 29 and Monday, May 1. Entry to all venues is free. For more information visit www.henleyartstrail.com.
