THE LEADER of the Wokingham Liberal Democrats said that he is “defending Laurel Park” from a 3G football pitch.
Cllr Clive Jones, who is also leader of Earley Town Council, said that he does not want a 3G pitch to be built on the lower field, next to the nature reserve.
It comes as residents near the site received a letter, stating that Wokingham Borough Council has identified Laurel Park as a potential site for the sports facility, and that it could be installed by the end of the year, if plans are approved.
The letter has prompted action from residents and councillors.
MBOS, a resident action group for people living in Marefield, Barkby, Owston and Sibson, has been formed in reaction to the proposal.
Cllr Jones added: “We have asked for a proper, meaningful consultation with all of the residents who live around the site.”
He said that the Liberal Democrats would also like to understand why other locations were not chosen.
Cllr Parry Batth, executive member for environment and leisure at the borough council, said that the council is carrying out feasibility studies to assess the site in more detail, before making any decisions.
“Should we decide to move forward with a new community facility at Laurel Park it would be subject to obtaining full planning permission, including engagement with local residents, and detailed environmental studies,” he said.
