Wokingham and District Association for the Elderly (WADE) is the latest charity to open an important new chapter in its life-enhancing history, thanks to the fundraising bookshelf at Tesco’s Finchampstead Road superstore.
The bookshelf enables store customers to donate unwanted books, or take a book and leave a donation, with the latest proceeds going towards enabling WADE keep up its essential work for the over-60s.
The charity provides a safe environment for its members to socialise, with lunch and even care for those with dementia available.
Now, thanks to the generosity of well-read Tesco shoppers throughout September and October, more than £300 has been donated to the charity, enabling it to undertake a refurbishment of the lounge area.
Leigh Slocombe, a trustee at the charity, said: “We are always very grateful for the support of Tesco and the local community. This money will make a big difference to us and our members.
“WADE has been supporting the over-60s of Wokingham for almost 50 years, offering a friendly, caring and stimulating environment.
“We aim to give our members a break from their own homes, where isolation and loneliness can be a real problem if they live alone.
“We also deliver day respite for carers, whether immediate family or professionals, who can be confident that their dependants are being well looked after in a caring and professional environment.”
WADE provides a range of services, including transport, physiotherapy, chiropody, haircuts and various social events throughout the year.
Louise Jedras, community champion at the Tesco store, said: “We’re delighted to be able to hand over this money to WADE.
“Anyone who’s ever had any contact with them knows how incredible they are.
“Their work brings joy to many members, as well as practical respite support for carers.
It’s one of many local charities that make a huge difference to a lot of lives.
“To support local charities, I’d encourage all customers to come in and have a look at the bookshelf to see if anything takes their fancy.
“If anything does, please do read it, leave a donation and drop off any spare books you have.
“The bookshelf is located near the food bank drop-off point by the checkouts.
“For larger donations of books, please take those to the customer service desk.”
