Reading Festival could get an extra day of music – but neighbours are fighting back

A showdown is looming over a plan for Reading Festival to have an extra day of music.

For years, Reading Festival has followed a regular programme of headline acts on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the August Bank Holiday weekend.

This year will see Charli XCX, rapper Dave and Chase & Status headline.

But earlier in the summer, the organisers, Festival Republic, applied to vary its licence to allow performances on the main stage only from 5pm to midnight.

This would make it similar to Glastonbury Festival, which does have selected big performances ahead of the event getting into full swing.

As well as that, Festival Republic has applied for alcohol to be sold in the arena from 11am on Wednesday to 3am on Thursday, with days sales taking place from 10am to 5pm.

FROM THE OPPOSITION: The Lib Dems are at it again

But concerns have been raised about increased noise and drinking by two associations representing hundreds of neighbours over the Thames in Caversham.

Elisa Miles, chair of the Warren & District Residents Association (WADRA), said: “WADRA is not opposed to Reading Festival.

“For more than 15 years, we have worked constructively with Festival Republic to improve the relationship between the Festival and the community.

“Through this long-standing partnership, we have helped them better understand the impact the festival has on nearby residents and have worked together to develop practical solutions.

“It is therefore with regret that WADRA objects to the current application.

“Thursday is a working night for most residents. Unlike the other days, many people will need to wake early on Friday for work or other commitments. Loud amplified music late into the evening will disrupt sleep for those who have no choice but to remain at home.”

She also pointed out there is “ample entertainment” that day, such as the silent disco, the amusements in the arena and pubs and restaurants in the area.

Meanwhile, Malcolm Pemble from the Caversham and District Residents Association argued that the organisers are attempting to keep festival-goers on site, which has an impact on reducing footfall for village traders.

Both WADRA and CADRA raised concerns about the extension of alcohol sales for revellers.

Mr Pemble’s letter states: “There will be increased noise to 3am in the morning which would appear to be unfair on residents.

“CADRA would also be concerned that this may create additional welfare issues and safety issues for the festival.

“It draws large numbers of young attendees, including many under 18 attending unaccompanied for the first time, with limited experience managing alcohol responsibly.”

He then pointed out that the protection of children from harm is a licensing objective.

Supporting the application, Eoghan Collins wrote: “Please know that an extension has my full support.

“I adore festival weekend.

“There’s less trouble than when Reading play football or a regular Friday night.

“The festival brings great energy and buzz to the town, recently with very little

disruption to traffic.”

The objections mean that a Reading Borough Council licensing applications sub-committee meeting has been called to make a decision.

This will take place on August 18.
