Shuttle bus plans for Nine Mile Road road closures

by John Wakefield

A shuttle bus service will be introduced in Finchampstead as roadworks on the Nine Mile Ride continue.

South East Water said that it has already laid 240 metres of pipes in Finchampstead Road, Gorse Ride South and Billing Avenue.

From Monday, September 2, works will move to Finchampstead Road to Nine Mile Ride, close to the junction of Gorse Ride South.

Nine Mile Ride is closed to motorists until next summer for the £1.4 million project to improve the village’s water supply.

South East Water said it has worked closely with Reading Buses, the bus operator which serves Nine Mile Ride with the 3 Leopard route, in order to minimise the potential impact of the road closure.

The temporary service will run between California Country Park and Sheerlands Road at Arborfield Green while South East Water works between Gorse Ride South and California Country Park.

When the water company moves into the third and final phase of its project, between California Country Park and Park Lane, a shuttle service will be in operation between Hogwood Industrial Estate and Sheerlands Road.

Jeremy Dufour, Project Manager, said: “We’re off to a really good start and I’m delighted that we are to complete the works in Finchampstead Road on schedule, meaning the road closure will be removed.

“This phase was timed to take place in the school holidays in order to minimise the impact on local schools.”

South East Water will now continue in Gorse Ride South, Billing Avenue and Nine Mile Ride.

“I’m really sorry for any inconvenience our road closure in Nine Mile Ride may cause but it is essential for us to protect pedestrians, motorists and our workforce.

“I know from our drop-in session that several residents were concerned about the impact this may have on bus services and I’m delighted that following our conversations with Reading Buses, a temporary shuttle service will be in place.”

South East Water says that access to homes and businesses will be maintained at all times and timetable details can be found at corporate.southeastwater.co.uk/finchampstead
