GREAT Western Railway (GWR) and Wokingham Borough Council (WBC) have delivered a series of improvements to make it easier for customers to access Twyford station.
Enhancements include six new dedicated pick-up and drop-off spaces where drivers can wait for up to 20 minutes, and the introduction of a bus stop on Station Road.
GWR Regional Development Manager for the East, Zach Bailey, said: “Twyford has seen significant customer growth in recent years, and it’s important the station continues to meet the needs of the communities it serves.
“Working closely with Wokingham Borough Council has allowed us to identify practical improvements that will make it easier for customers to access the station, whether they’re travelling by car, bus or being dropped off.
“These are important first steps, and we’re continuing to work together on longer-term plans to provide even more parking and improve sustainable transport links in the future.”
The station has also benefited from a small increase in parking capacity following the re-lining of the main car park in the spring, while drivers can also now use the permit holders’ car park after 10am with an off-peak ticket, utilising additional capacity.
It follows a customer survey that highlighted demand for better pick-up and drop-off facilities, improved bus connections and more parking.
Wokingham Borough Council is now reviewing further opportunities to improve bus services to the station, with changes expected to start from April 2027 as part of the council’s retendering of supported bus services.
GWR has also now designed an expansion of the station’s main car park, which would create 50 additional spaces, and is working with partners to secure Department for Transport funding.
Wokingham Borough Council Executive Member for Active Travel, Transport and Highways, Councillor Adrian Betteridge, said:
“Twyford Station is a really important local transport hub and we want to make it easier to access, however you travel.
“Improving access to the station will support sustainable travel from the borough, and reduce the impact on the local community from the presence of the busy station.
“These changes delivered by GWR are small but important first steps in achieving this, with more to follow.”
