WOKINGHAM Communities Vision this week highlights Berkshire Vision’s work rebuilding people’s independence after sight loss.
When a Wokingham resident was diagnosed with macular degeneration later in life, the impact was immediate and profound.
The condition, which affects central vision, progressed rapidly and left her with significant sight loss despite receiving treatment.
Previously a highly independent and accomplished professional, she suddenly found everyday tasks such as reading, cooking and travelling alone increasingly difficult.
As she adapted to her new reality, she also faced the emotional challenge of bereavement.
Losing her independence at the same time as coping with personal loss left her feeling isolated and uncertain about the future.
That’s when she was referred to Berkshire Vision, a charity that supports blind and visually impaired people across Berkshire.
Working alongside the charity’s specialist team, she began accessing practical tools and services designed to help her regain confidence.
Berkshire Vision’s Equipment and Resources team introduced her to a range of assistive technologies, including magnifiers, text-to-speech software and audio labelling devices.
These simple but effective solutions helped her return to everyday activities that had become difficult following her diagnosis.
The support extended beyond practical assistance.
Recognising the impact that sight loss and bereavement can have on mental wellbeing, Berkshire Vision connected her with its Telephone Befriending service and encouraged her to take part in local social groups and outings.
These opportunities provided more than just activities.
They offered companionship, understanding and the chance to connect with others facing similar challenges.
Through the charity’s Living Well with Sight Loss course, she also gained practical advice and met people who understood the realities of adjusting to sight loss.
Today, she is more confident, connected and independent than she did in the months following her diagnosis.
Her story reflects the wider work Berkshire Vision carries out across Wokingham and Berkshire.
The charity supports people of all ages and at every stage of their sight loss journey, helping them access advice, equipment, employment support, guiding services and adapted sports and social activities.
For many people, one of the biggest challenges after losing their sight is simply knowing where to turn for help.
Berkshire Vision works to ensure residents can access support as early as possible, helping them rebuild independence and remain active members of their communities.
Through practical advice, emotional support and opportunities to connect with others, the charity is helping people with sight loss live happier, healthier and more independent lives.
