Community Carer of the Year, sponsored by Alexandra Grange Care Home, winner: Gill White
WOKINGHAM Community Awards’ Community Carer of the Year Award goes to a person whose whole life has been dedicated to the love and care of others, says her daughter, Michelle.
Gill White and her family attended the event despite having experienced a very challenging day.
For five years, Gill cared lovingly for both her parents as they lived with dementia.
Now she is caring for her husband, who has a terminal illness.
She also helps to look after her two grandchildren, both of whom have autism.
Day after day, she gives without complaining, and carries on with kindness, patience, and love, says her daughter.
When her best friend was suddenly widowed, she offered comfort, strength, and support.
When she found a little time for herself through art, she gave it up to make sure her husband could still enjoy his hobbies and attend appointments.
Everyone who knows her speaks with admiration of her generosity, selflessness, and heart for others.
On the day of the ceremony, Gill’s husband, Trevor, had been moved into care.
Gill’s daughter, Michelle, said: “Mum is always there for everyone else, and never for herself.
“She has spent her whole adult life being there for others.
“In the last week my dad has become very ill, and everything happened just before the awards ceremony.
“Mum didn’t want to leave him tonight, but he persuaded her to come to the event, and he really wanted her to receive this award.
“She is, quite simply, one of the kindest people you could ever meet.
“Mum deserves this.”
Gill and her family were visibly moved after their difficult day.
“It has been very emotional,” said Gill.
“I’m accepting this award for my husband, Trevor, and we’re going to take it straight over to him to share it with him.
“There are a lot of other worthy people out there, but it’s lovely that my family and friends think so much of me.
“They are the source of my strength, and they keep me going.”
