A sign suggesting that lingerie and adult retailer Ann Summers could be coming to Wokingham has prompted a wave of amused reactions from residents online.
The sign, which appeared to advertise an upcoming Ann Summers store in the town centre, was shared on social media, with many believing it was a joke put up by a mystery resident rather than an official announcement. The sign has since been removed.
There is currently no indication that Ann Summers plans to open a branch in Wokingham.
The sighting quickly gained attention on local Facebook groups, where residents responded with a mixture of excitement, disbelief and humour.
Some users joked that the retailer would bring a different type of shopping experience to the town centre, while others questioned whether the sign was genuine.
One resident wrote that the sign would be “the biggest thing to happen in Wokingham for years”, while another joked that it would finally give them a reason to visit the town centre.
One resident said: “I doubt Ann Summers would look twice at a town like Wokingham,.. But if they did so what? They are an established business and a very popular store or are we going to get all prudish because it’s Ann Summers?”
Others speculated about who may have created the sign, with several suggesting it was part of a light-hearted prank.
The incident comes amid ongoing discussion about the future of Wokingham town centre, with residents frequently debating the mix of shops and businesses in the area. Recent conversations on social media have focused on vacant retail units and what new stores could fill them.
Wokingham has seen a number of humorous alterations to signs in recent months. In May, a vacant shop advertisement in the town centre was repeatedly modified by unknown individuals, turning “To Let” into “Toilet” and “Under Offer” into “Under Pants”.
For now, the mystery Ann Summers sign appears to be another example of local humour rather than a genuine retail announcement.
