The Earley and Woodley Conservatives have welcomed Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg as their latest guest in a series of talks.
Sir Jacob has been making headlines for years for his unique public figure and outspoken personality, and currently serves as a broadcaster on GB News.
He recently visited the area to speak at the ‘Conservatives unfiltered’ series of talks held by local Conservatives at Pearson Hall in Sonning.
Councillor Pauline Jorgensen, the leader of the Earley and Woodley Conservatives said: “Sir Jacob Rees Mogg entertained Earley and Woodley Conservatives with a fascinating talk on the future of the Conservative Party and answered lots of questions.
“His humourous style and encyclopedic knowledge of Parliament and history, combined with good company and excellent refreshments, made this a fascinating and entertaining evening.”
Those present were able to tuck into a ‘many thanks Jacob’ cake made by Hilary Pollock.
Cllr Jorgensen (Conservatives, Hillside) served as the party’s MP candidate, but lost in the general election to Yuan Yang, the Labour MP for Earley and Woodley.
Ms Yang won with 18,209 votes to cllr Jorgensen’s 17,361 votes, a majority of 848.
Cllr Jorgensen is the leader of the opposition on Wokingham Borough Council.
Sir Jacob served in Parliament from 2010 to 2024, losing his seat during this year’s general election.
He was elected as the MP for North East but lost the first challenge in the new North East Somerset and Hanham constituency.
The election was almost a rematch of 2010, when he and Labour candidate Dan Norris competed against each other.
Mr Norris won with 20,739 votes, a majority of 5,319 over Sir Jacob’s 15,420 vote tally.
Sir Jacob has been a host and presenter on GB News since early 2023.
According to reports from February this year, he earned £324,121.44 in a year from the broadcasting company.
