The ‘Wokingham flag’ is coming home after making its final appearance at this morning’s clash between Mexico and England in the World Cup 2026.
The man behind the Wokingham flag is Nick Ashwell, son of Wokingham Town Football Club president, and the borough councillor in charge of sport, Mark.
Wokingham-born Nick lives in Dublin, Ireland, and made the ytip for today’s match via Madrid.
Nick, an electrical wholesaler, has taken the flag with him on his travels watching England’s national football and cricket teams around the world, and met his wife Gloria while following cricket in New Zealand.
The flag itself is well travelled, having also been to Brazil, Russia and South Africa – and is regularly seen at Wokingham Town’s home at Lowther Road in Emmbrook, where it had pride of place in the clubhouse for the Qatar World Cup in 2022.
