A DINNER celebrating making a difference was held in Sindlesham late last month, as Wokingham Lions Club marked a successful year of fundraising.
The group gathered at The Walter Arms on Bearwood Road where they witnesses the handover of the presidency, and welcomed Wokigham town mayor, Cllr Sally Gurney, and her consort, Chris Cooke.
As is tradition, the Mayor was inducted as an honorary member for her year in office.
Outgoing president Claire Mangers-Page says he was delighted with the success of her 12 months at the held.
“We raised a record £53,000 from 12 fundraising events including the May Fayre, Winter Carnival, Classic Car Show, Comedy Nights, Wokingham Walks, quiz evenings, and our contribution towards the Firework Spectacular at Cantley Field,” she said.
“This is due to our strong team of dedicated members, including six new active and enthusiastic members, and the generous residents in our community. We donate all the funds raised to mainly local charities and individuals in need.
“This past year we visited several local charities and others gave us presentations about their work. This gave us a better understanding of how our donations help those in need within our community.
“We are so fortunate to live in a town with a great spirit of giving and kindness towards others.”
Fundraising chairman Andy Goffin said an addition £2,000 was raised from its 100 Club, donations, and gift aid, taking the total to £55,000.
“From feedback we have received from other charities who, for example, have stalls at our events, or obtain sponsorship for their favourite good causes while enjoying one of The Wokingham Walks, we estimate that at least the same amount is raised by other charities as we raise ourselves,” he added.
The group’s new president is Lyn Baily, who said: “I am looking forward to my second term as President – the first term was during lockdown which felt very different.
“The club is going from strength to strength as we continue to grow and expand in every way. It is an exciting time for us.
“We already work closely with colleagues in the charity sector, helping out where we are needed.
“I know that our members are willing and able to get involved with projects where they can help, and hope that local charities or organisations will contact us if they have a project where they think we can provide assistance.
“We are always here to help and enjoy getting involved with our community.”
