A READING resident will be stepping out under the stars in memory of a loved one this October.
Sophie Colwill, 25, will take part in this year’s Sue Ryder Starlight Hike Thames Valley in memory of her grandmother who was cared for by Sue Ryder hospice.
Sophie said: “My grandma Valarie was cared for at Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice in May 2023.
“She was a very cheeky person, and the staff absolutely loved her.
“They would sing with her and have a laugh together; the nurses were so warm and caring.
“They made a difficult time in our lives a lot easier.”
When Sophie saw the Sue Ryder Starlight Hike advertised at the hospice last year she decided to get involved.
“I was feeling quite down about my grandma having passed away and I wanted to raise money for Sue Ryder because of all the support they had given her and my family.
“I also wanted to have a special evening where we could remember her.”
She joined last year’s night walk, and has signed up again for the event this autumn.
“I remember feeling quite emotional halfway round the walk where they had a space to write a dedication for the person you are walking for, and I put down my grandma Valerie’s name,” she said.
“It’s such a wholesome event, and a wonderful way to celebrate the people you love who have died, but also a fantastic way to raise money for a charity who supports you in every way.”
“Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, it makes you remember we are all there for the same reason, each with our own personal stories.
“I’m really proud to support Sue Ryder – last year we raised £400 from the Starlight Hike and we try to do as much as we can to support in other ways, like donating to the charity shops.
“My dad and brother even climbed Snowden for Sue Ryder and raised £1,000.
“We’re really looking forward to this year’s Starlight Hike and can’t wait to join all the other walkers for a magical evening.”
Hundreds of people, some dressed in neon or lights,will be walking the hike’s 10 kilometre route to remember their loved one and to support the hospice.
The event is accompanied by music, lights, and last year a choir, with entertainment throughout the night.
It will take place in the grounds of Mapledurham Estate, Reading, on Saturday, October 5, from 5pm until 10pm.
Tickets cost £20.00 for adults, £8 for under 18s, and are free for walkers aged 5 or younger.
On the day tickets, subject to availability, will cost £23 for adults and £10 for under 18s.
