Thames Valley Recorder Orchestra, which started life in Twyford, is returning to the village to perform its ‘world tour’ concert.
About 30 players will perform their Summer in the City event on Sunday, June 23 at Loddon Hall in Loddon Hall Road at 3pm.
Among the performers will be Twyford musician Anne Helmore who started the orchestra with its conductor Helen Hooker in Twyford’s Scout HQ. The players now meet at Knowl Hill Village Hall.
The recorders in the orchestra will range from sopraninos, just eight inches long, and the highest in tone at the concert, to contrabasses, 8ft long and the lowest being played.
Soprano Catherine Jennaway will join the contrabass players to perform a new arrangement of Brazilian composer Villa Lobos’l Bachiana Brasileras No.5. The orchestra says this will be “a spectacle not to be missed”.
The programme includes Corelli’s Baroque Concerti Grossi, Holst’s charming Brook Green Suite, Michael Graham’s evocative Parisian Sketchbook and The Dam Busters theme.
The concert’s ‘world tour’ of music takes in Paris, London and Rome, as well as Brazil.
A reviewer of past concerts has said: “The orchestra’s experienced players produce rich and varied tones from the combination of the different recorders’ qualities. Each type of recorder has a vital part within the music and every player counts.
“They make a lovely sound.”
This will be the orchestra’s second visit to Loddon Hall. During the interval, the audience can enjoy the hall patio’s views across the King George V recreation ground, hopefully in the sunshine. Refreshments are included in the ticket price.
