THE wheels of the bus go round and round usually, but on Wednesday morning they stopped momentarily while a vigilant bus driver and a compassionate young man helped rescue injured wildlife.
The bus driver was on his way home, having delivered children with special additional needs to school.
Driving through Wokingham on London Road at around 10am, he approached the Binfield Road junction traffic lights.
He said: “I noticed to the right of me an injured squirrel which was having difficulty making its way across the road.
“I didn’t want to run it over, so I stopped the bus.
“And as there was traffic behind me, I put on my hazard lights to let them know something was up.”
But the driver needed someone outside the vehicle to help him drive around the creature, as it was difficult to see it from his seat.
“A young lad was walking past,” he continued, “so I asked him if he could help me make sure that if I drove on very slowly, I wouldn’t hurt the squirrel.
“But, instead, he stepped into the road and lifted the squirrel up directly in front of me, before placing him on the grass verge next to the path.
“And I thought, ‘What a kind lad he is to care about this poor squirrel.’
“He deserves a special mention.”
Are you that caring person? This story is for you.
