WOKINGHAM woman Nina Barough CBE 30 years ago set up what would become a major UK breast cancer charity.
After three decades of service to the charity she now stands down.
Walk the Walk Worldwide has appointed David Wright to take over as its new Chief Executive Officer.
Succeeding founder Nina Barough CBE his leadership marks a significant new chapter in the charity’s history.
David joins Walk the Walk with more than three decades of experience in business and consultancy, having held senior leadership roles at Dell Computer Corporation and Electronic Data Systems (EDS), before advising global brands including O2, Rolls-Royce and National Express.
Most recently, he served as Managing Director of Director Group.
He has played a key role within Walk the Walk, firstly as a Trustee and later as Chair of the Board of Trustees.
Following a competitive recruitment process, he has now been appointed Chief Executive Officer.
David’s appointment follows the announcement that Nina Barough CBE would step down as CEO after founding the charity in 1996 and leading it for three decades.
Thirty years ago, 13 women power walked the New York City Marathon in decorated bras to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
That one-off fundraising challenge grew into Walk the Walk, now a multi-million-pound charity.
Since then, more than half a million people have taken part in Walk the Walk events, including its flagship event, The MoonWalk London, helping raise more than £148 million to support cancer research, care and prevention initiatives.
David Wright said: “It is an honour to take on the role of CEO at Walk the Walk at such an important moment in its history.
“Having served as both Trustee and Chair, I’ve seen first-hand the passion, dedication and impact of this charity.
“I am excited to work alongside our team, supporters and partners to build on its extraordinary legacy.
“Together, we will continue to raise vital funds, drive awareness and inspire more people to walk, get active and make a meaningful difference to the lives of people living with cancer and their families.”
Walk the Walk encourages women and men of all ages to get active through walking challenges that promote healthier lifestyles while raising funds for people affected by breast and other cancers.
