The Wokingham community is fondly remembering Harry Atkinson, a man known for his stalwart nature and commitment to local projects, who has passed away.
Having worked as a fuel systems engineer, he later transitioned into a supportive role as a learning support assistant at St. Crispin’s school. For several years, he worked quietly in the science and maths departments, sharing his technical expertise and offering a helpful hand to students.
Harry’s dedication to the community was perhaps most visible through his 15-year involvement with the Pinewood Community Orchard group. He played a crucial role in restoring the orchard, originally planted to feed patients of Pinewood Sanatorium.
An unobtrusive worker, Harry spent countless hours clearing undergrowth and weeds to make way for new growth. His steady efforts – digging, planting, and tending to young saplings transformed the largely neglected orchard into a thriving sanctuary of 22 heritage fruit trees.
Harry’s helpful presence was also a staple of the Wokingham Community Apple Press.
During autumn festivals and visits to schools and Scout groups, Harry provided practical demonstrations, ensuring the tradition of apple pressing continued for the next generation.
He was also instrumental in making use of windfall apples, and surplus fruit that was not distributed to the local community from Pinewood Community Orchard to be pressed and bottled, becoming an important fundraiser for the orchard.
A long-standing member of the Berkshire Museum of Aviation, Harry will be remembered as a kind and dependable friend to the local groups he served.
His quiet dedication has left a lasting impact on the landscape and community, enriched by his efforts.
