The leader of Reform UK in Wokingham and the leader of Wokingham Conservatives have reacted following news that a landmark building in town is set to be purchased by the Wokingham Islamic Centre.
It was exclusively revealed by Wokingham Today that the Wokingham Islamic Centre has exchanged contracts to buy the former Ritz cinema building on Easthampstead Road.
A spokesperson for Wokingham Islamic Centre told Wokingham Today: “Our vision is to create a vibrant community hub that benefits the whole town.
“Alongside prayers, we hope to provide educational programmes, youth activities, science clubs, family events, charitable initiatives and support services that are open and welcoming.”
Colin Wright, leader of Reform UK in Wokingham said: ““Hopefully it’s going to bring more people into the town and have a knock on effect on businesses in Wokingham.
“It’s an eyesore. It’s been derelict for years. It was never going to come back as a cinema. It makes Wokingham look particularly grubby.
“It would be good to see the site back in use. Nobody I know will have any issues with it at all.”
Conservative leader Pauline Jorgensen added: ““Whilst I have no issues with a new mosque any proposals will be looked at by the planning committee based on normal planning requirements like parking and the potential impact on residents.”
