THE final game of Thames Valley Kings Division Two South season which was scheduled on Sunday 12th May between the top two teams – Kings and Warwickshire Bears 2 was regrettably canceled and will be left unplayed due to time constraints.
The game which formed part of a double-header of fixtures for the Bears had to be unfortunately canceled following the on-court death of a player for Derby Wheelblazers who were taking on the Bears 3 in a Third Division Central game in the match preceding the Kings one. At this time, the cause of death is unknown however, The Bears had trained first aiders to hand who valiantly administered first aid but sadly there was nothing that could be done. The death has shocked the wheelchair basketball community.
Although Kings will finish top of the division, it’s an incredibly bitter-sweet scenario to face taking the league crown in this manner. The first team, however, can be proud of the achievement of finishing in a finals spot and will be relishing the opportunity to play at a second straight national league finals to crown the National Division Two champions this weekend.
Kings will face the Northern League runners up first at 12pm, the North Wales Knights in the semi-finals before either a 3/4th place or the championship game on Sunday against the teams of the 2nd semi-final between Warwickshire Bears 2 and the Lancaster Bulldogs.
