Twyford is set to top everyone’s summer reading lists following the opening of the new library last Thursday (13 June).
The new community space will offer space for people to relax and read, study, browse resources and access services including free internet.
The new library is also equipped with a specially designed children’s library which includes nook seating and storage.
According to Wokingham Borough Council, the library has been designed with flexibility in mind, with furniture which can be moved around to help accommodate different events and activities as people use the space.
Colours and materials have been chosen to create a welcoming and calming space, reflecting feedback the council received from user groups about creating inclusive spaces when designing other new libraries in the borough.
Based in the Grade-II listed Old Polehampton Boys’ School on Polehampton Close, the new library offers a bright space which incorporates historical features including high ceilings, large panelled windows and areas of exposed decorative brickwork.
The modern extension helps connect the historic main hall with a new accessible entrance and an outdoor courtyard area with seating and planting beds.
Over the coming months the library service hopes to work with local organisations to start turning the space outside the library into a garden area where people will be able to relax when the weather is nice.
The new library continues to operate the usual hours of:

Monday – 2pm to 5pm

Tuesday – 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm

Thursday – 2pm to 5pm

Friday – 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm

Saturday – 9.30am to 12.30pm

The library will also be hosting a Wokingham Borough Community Vision drop-in session on Friday, June 21, from 2pm until 5pm.
Residents will be able to find out more about the Vision, ask questions, and share their feedback in person.

Following the move, visitors will no longer be able to access services from the old library building.
The council will be considering a number of options for the old building over the coming months as part of its ongoing asset review.
The library service is also keen to get the community involved with their local library, and would love to hear from residents interested in volunteering at their local library or in supporting services like delivering books to residents who are unable to go to the library in person.
