Wokingham Boxing Academy, based in Oaklands Park, recently hosted a successful interclub sparring day to raise funds for new equipment, and to support competition opportunities for its developing boxers.
The event brought together boxers from several clubs across the region, and provided valuable ring experience in a safe and controlled environment.
Having recently travelled to a number of gyms for sparring sessions, it was a an opportunity for Wokingham Boxing Academy to welcome clubs to their own venue ,and to showcase the progress being made by its fighters.
The day was supported by family members, friends and supporters, creating a brilliant atmosphere throughout. Coaches were particularly pleased to see the strong team spirit and camaraderie on display, both inside and outside the ring.
Like many grassroots sports clubs, Wokingham Boxing Academy faces increasing operating costs.
Rising rent, business rates, utility bills and equipment costs continue to place pressure on community sports organisations, making fundraising events such as the interclub sparring day increasingly important.
The funds raised will be reinvested directly into the club, helping provide equipment, coaching opportunities and competition experiences for local boxers.
As a community-focused club, Wokingham Boxing Academy continues to provide opportunities for young people to develop confidence, discipline and fitness through the sport.
The club is currently working closely with the Youth Justice Service as part of an initiative supported by Wokingham borough council, with young people attending regular training sessions and making positive progress through their involvement with boxing.
The club believes boxing can play an important role in providing direction, improving self-discipline and helping young people make positive choices.
Coaches have been encouraged by the progress being made and are proud to be supporting an initiative that benefits both the individuals involved and the wider community.
The club has continued to grow through the commitment of its volunteers, coaches, members and supporters and has never received funding or facilities from the local council, nor sought such assistance.
A spokesperson for the club said: “The sparring day was a fantastic success and exactly what boxing should be about. It was great to see clubs coming together, our boxers gaining valuable experience, and so many family members and friends supporting the athletes throughout the day.
“The funds raised will help us continue investing in our boxers, and provide more opportunities for them to compete and develop.”
Wokingham Boxing Academy recently became affiliated with England Boxing, another positive step forward as the club continues to expand its opportunities for local boxers and young people within the community.
Wokingham Boxing Academy welcomes new members of all abilities and currently runs classes on Mondays and Thursdays at 7pm, Tuesdays at 8pm, Wednesdays at 6pm and Sundays at 11am.
The club is based at STMA HQ, a full-time mixed martial arts and combat sports facility.
