With the summer holidays looming and the cost of living still pinching our pockets, finding ways to keep the family entertained without breaking the bank is the ultimate July challenge.
Fortunately, our borough is bursting with community spirit, green spaces, and completely free events this week. From high-voltage eco-exhibits to tranquil morning wellness, we’ve rounded up five things you can do in and around Wokingham over the next few days — all for a grand total of £0.
1. Spark Your Interest at the rEVolution Electric Vehicle Event
-
Where: Elms Field, Wokingham town centre
-
When: Saturday, July 4 | 10:00 am until 2:00 pm
-
Best for: Tech enthusiasts, eco-warriors, and curious drivers
Thinking about making the switch to electric, or just fancy snooping on the latest green tech? Head down to Elms Field on Saturday. The town’s premier Electric Vehicle and E-Bike event is taking over. You can explore a massive range of the latest EV models and electric bikes, speak directly with local owners about real-world running costs, and chat with sustainability experts. It’s a completely free, zero-pressure environment to look into the future of transport.
2. Experience the Pageantry of the Crowthorne Carnival
-
Where: Wellington College to the Morgan Recreation Ground, Crowthorne
-
When: Saturday, July 4 | Parade starts at 12:00 noon
-
Best for: A vibrant family day out
Just a stone’s throw away, our neighbours are launching the spectacular Crowthorne Carnival 2026, and this year’s theme is a magnificent tribute to Planet Earth.
The highlight of the opening weekend is the Grand Procession. Find a spot along the high street at noon to watch a vibrant convoy of custom-built community floats, marching bands, and walking performers.
Afterward, wander down to the recreation ground fete. While there are plenty of stalls and food trucks to tempt your wallet, entry to the arena shows, live music stages, and the highly anticipated dog show (starting at 1:30 pm) is completely free to spectate.
3. Find Your Zen with Park Yoga
-
Where: Howard Palmer Gardens (just off Cockpit Path)
-
When: Sunday, July 5 | 9:30 am – 10:30 am
-
Best for: Stretching away the weekly stress
If Saturday’s excitement leaves you needing a reset, pack a mat or a towel and head to the shaded lawns of Howard Palmer Gardens on Sunday morning.
Supported by Wokingham town council, these weekly Park Yoga sessions are entirely free and open to everyone — whether you’re a seasoned yogi or someone who can barely touch their toes.
Led by qualified local instructors, it’s a brilliant, relaxed way to enjoy the fresh morning air and join a welcoming community crowd.
4. Step Back in Time on the Wokingham Town Photo Trail
-
Where: Starts at Wokingham town hall, Market Place
-
When: Anytime this week
-
Best for: Local history buffs and active kids
Do you want to explore the town centre at your own pace?
The Wokingham Photo Trail is a fantastic, self-guided walking asset that costs absolutely nothing. You can download the trail map via Wokingham Rocks or pick up details locally. It challenges you to match historical photographs and architectural clues to the modern-day shopfronts, hidden alleyways, and timber-framed buildings around the town hall.
It’s a brilliant excuse to get some steps in while discovering the hidden quirks of Wokingham’s 13th-century heritage.
5. Escape into Nature at Finchampstead Ridges
-
Where: Simon’s Wood / Finchampstead Ridges, RG40 3TS
-
When: Open daily, dawn until dusk
-
Best for: Dog walkers, nature photographers, and peace-seekers
Sometimes the best free activity is simply unplugging.
Managed beautifully by the National Trust, Finchampstead Ridges has been a favourite escape for Berkshire residents for over a century.
Take a walk through Simon’s Wood to discover the mysterious, glassy waters of the Heath Pond, or wander along the ridge for spectacular, sweeping views across neighboring counties.
It’s completely free to access, offers plenty of shade under the ancient canopy, and provides the perfect backdrop for a budget-friendly family picnic.
