PEOPLE in and around Wokingham will soon be able to give a Christmas present to put a smile on a child’s face.
Each year generous shoppers in the borough take part in a campaign to give local youngsters a gift, who would otherwise go without on Christmas Day.
For more than 23 years The Giving Tree has been encouraging people to buy a present and keep a child on Santa’s list.
Giving Trees in the borough will be decorated with gift tags, for shoppers to choose and buy the toy or voucher requested on it.
Returned unwrapped to the tree, gifts are sent to the charities for wrapping and delivery to children.
This year, groups benefitting from the campaign are:
Transform Housing, Home Start, Dingley’s Promise, Kaleidoscopic, Berkshire Women’s Aid, Berkshire Vision, Barnardo’s, The Cow Shed, First Days, Promise Inclusion, and Sebastians Action Trust.
Children supported by the 11 organisations will be able to receive a present on Christmas morning, thanks to the generosity of shoppers.
The Giving Tree 2023 launch will be attended by Wokingham Borough Council mayor, councilor Beth Rowland, and town mayor, councillor Sally Gurney.
The campaign is organised by Gill Mckernan, who, with Tesco community champion Louise Jedras, will welcome charity leaders and dignitaries to the launch, at Tesco Wokingham on Tuesday, November 14, at 10am.
