A NEW initiative will teach lifelong practical skills to children, while showing them how important it is to protect the environment for the future, and how they can contribute
The Eco Skills Learning Centre at Pudding Lane Nursery is starting a new monthly club designed for children and their parents.
Called the Textile Club, it will teach basic sewing skills, such as ironing, cutting, pinning and tacking fabric.
Participants will also learn how to repair and adjust clothes, turn up hems, sew on buttons, and insert zips, with sessions limited to 10 bookings in order to give participants individual attention.
While learning, children will be making child-friendly projects, and organisers say there is also scope for projects designed by the children themselves.
“We’ll be using hand and electric sewing machines, and will make good use of unwanted fabrics, threads, pins and needles,” said project organiser, Billie Bachra.
“We’re always looking for really fun fabric offcuts; children especially love fluffy fabric to make toys, so we’d love people to donate fabrics they don’t need.
“We also appreciate threads, zips, buttons, and would be especially grateful for the offer of a few more sewing machines and small irons.”
The Textile Club will take place at The Eco Skills Learning Centre, Pudding Lane Nursery, Arborfield, on the third Thursday of each month, from 6pm until 8pm.
The first club session will be on Thursday, January 15, 2026.

Anyone interested in taking part, or in helping with the project is asked to email: billie@spencerswoodrepaircafe.co.uk.
Participants are asked to give their name and the name and ages of their children.
